Patterns of Play + Positioning - Session Review (17 May 2021)

*Key Learnings*

  • Positioning
    • Three key breakdown positions - Flat Attack, Defensive Line, Jockey
    • Qualities of a "good" position - Can see the contest, not in the way of play, and can transition easily to the next phase (entry/exit).
    • Practice go-to arrival, transition and exit positions, so they become natural and fluid, rather than another "something" to concentrate on during the game (see positioning drills link below).
    • Run as many straight lines as possible, rather than arcs or diagonals - either directly up/down the field, or straight across.
    • Even when transitioning through the jockey position, square up before passing by the breakdown to be in a sound position to make a decision at the contest, if needed.
  • Patterns of Play
    • Three basic patterns of play: Same-way (most common), Wide, Return
    • Consider what teams are trying to achieve, and which patterns of play they may employ in order do that.
    • Same-way used often from lineouts and scrums near touch.
    • Wide attack often from lineouts, requires a high work-rate from the referee.
    • Teams can use verbal cues to direct play, these can sometimes be picked up on e.g. "same again". Halfback's leg/body position will often give away the direction of their pass e.g. right foot positioned closer to their goal line means more likely to pass right.

Anticipate what teams are trying to achieve, based on WHERE on the park play is, and WHAT phase of play it is currently e.g. lineout, midfield scrum etc

Look and listen for clues to help you anticipate.

PRACTICE basic go-to positions for the breakdown. Practice is done between games, not on game day.
