1. Players of the team throwing in are moving towards the place for a lineout. As they move within 2 metres of the line of touch, these players turn and then take up a position 10 metres behind the line of touch. What should the referee rule?

2. At a lineout after the ball has been thrown in the thrower moves infield. This player does not join the lineout and stands alongside the receiver waiting for the ball. What should the referee rule?

3. In a 1st XV match the team throwing into the lineout put 11 players in the lineout. The opponents make no adjustment to the 5 players they had ready at the lineout. What should the referee rule?

4. A defender passes the ball back into the 22 area to a team-mate who kicks the ball directly into touch. Where is the place of the lineout?

5. The attackers put the ball into touch on the defender’s 10m line. The defenders take a quick throw-in with the correct ball on the 22- metre line to a player only 3 metres from touch. The referee disallows the throw-in and gives the attackers the option of a scrum or a lineout and they opt to take the scrum. Where is the mark for the scrum?

6. At a lineout the opposing hooker stands ten metres back from the lineout and no other player is in the position between the touch line and 5 metres. What should the referee rule?

7. An attacker jumps and catches the ball from a defenders kick before it crosses the plane of the touch line. This player lands with one foot on the touch-line. Which team throws into the lineout?

8. May a player at Under 13 or below be supported or lifted at the lineout?

9. The defenders take a drop-out. The ball does not cross the 22 metre line and is blown back and rolls into touch 8 metres from the goal line without being touched by either team. How does play restart?

10. A defender carries the ball back into the 22 and is tackled. The defender passes the ball to a team-mate who kicks the ball directly into touch on the halfway. Where is the mark for the lineout.

 

ANSWERS – Week 16

1. If other than a drop kick is used at a kick-off or restart kick, what should the referee rule?

The non-kicking team has the option of a re-kick or scrum (Law 12.1)

 

2. At a kick-off or restart kick following a score, what should the referee rule if the opposition players are not on or behind their 10m line?

The kick is retaken (Law 12.5)

 

3. At a kick-off or restart kick following a score, if the ball reaches the 10m line but is blown back or if an opponent of the kicker plays the ball, what should the referee rule?

Play continues (Law 12.7)

 

4. At a kick-off or restart kick following a score, if the ball goes directly into touch, what should the referee rule?

Offer the non-kicking team the option of choosing:

A. a re-kick

B. scrum

C. lineout

D. quick throw

5. How is a 22m drop out taken?

A. anywhere on or behind the 22m line (Scrum)

B. without delay (FK)

C. the ball must cross the 22m line (the opposition has the option of the kick being retaken or a scrum)

D. the ball must not go directly into touch - the opposition chooses:

i. drop-out being retaken

ii. scrum

iii. lineout

iv. quick throw

6. At a drop out, if the ball does not reach the 22m line, can advantage apply?

Yes (Law 12.16)

 

7. When does a lineout commence?

When the ball leaves the hands of the thrower (Law 18.26)

 

8. Once a lineout is formed may players leave the lineout?

A. throwing team players may not, other than to change positions with other participating players

B. players of the non-throwing team may do so only to ensure they do not have more players than the throwing team

9. Once a lineout has commenced, what can lineout players do?

A. compete for possession

B. catch or deflect the ball and deflect the ball with the outside arm/hand only if both hands are above their head (FK)

C. lift or support a team-mate and lower that player to the ground (FK)

D. leave the lineout to be in a position to receive the ball provided they remain within 10m of the mark of touch and keep moving until the lineout is over (FK)

E. grasp and bring an opponent to ground provided that player is not in the air (PK)

10. When a ruck or maul forms at the mark of touch, what may lineout players do?

A. join the ruck or maul

B. retire to the offside line which is the hindmost foot of that player’s team in the ruck or maul

11. When does a lineout end?

A. the ball or a player in possession of the ball:

(i). leaves the lineout

(ii). enters the area between the touchline and the 5m line

(iii). goes beyond the 15m line

B. a ruck or maul forms and all the feet of the players in the ruck or maul move beyond the mark of touch

C. the ball becomes unplayable
